About

This is the class blog of the Edinboro University of Pennsylvania course, Sociology of Superheroes. Taught by Dr. Rhonda Matthews, this course seeks to examine comics & superhero culture with a depth that usually doesn’t make it’s way into comic book store discussions. In this blog, we seek to go beyond the superficial “my-superhero-can-beat-up-your-superhero” discussions & enter the world of sociological analysis.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Who watches the Watchmen? This question is the primary theme of the landmark comic series titled, Watchmen. Once viewed as the cultural domain of pre-pubescent boys, superheroes have entered the mainstream. Via new comic book titles, graphic novels, blockbuster films and prominent cultural iconography (many professional athletes display their Superman logo tattoos). Using the sociological perspective, this course will focus on the analysis of the socio-cultural components of diversity inherent to comic books, via the broader U.S. culture, sub-cultures, and global cultures. Along the way, FYE 105 is designed to orient first year, transfer and first time Edinboro students during the transition to university life.
